Transcription Jobs at Home | Work Remotely

Working from home as a Transcriptionist is a pretty good gig!

Transcription jobs at home are a great opportunity for someone that wants to be in charge of their own hours.   With this particular work at home job, you choose how many hours you want to work and when.

A transcriptionist’s job requires listening to an audio file and typing what you hear from that audio file.  Above all, the job requires focus and very good grammar skills.  In addition, I would recommend a good grammar/spelling product to make the job easier.  Also, I will recommend some tools below that will cover your immediate and long-term needs.

General transcription jobs at home should not require any prior training vs. medical transcription; which will require training.

In the beginning, some companies may ask for a certain amount of experience and some specific equipment that you do not have.  The good news is that you can develop a solid reputation as a transcriptionist.  Furthermore,  the transcription sites I list below that don't require previous experience, will help you develop your reputation.

After a few jobs, you will start building a reputation/work history and expand the transcription companies you can work anytime from anywhere.   As you gain experience, you will pick up additional tools that will make your life easier as a transcriptionist.   Subsequently, you really do not need many extras to start your journey.   With that said,  you will want to invest in some of these items as you become more confident as a transcriptionist.

At first, here is what you need

transcription keyboard

  • Headphones
  • Transcription software (Free Download | Express Scribe)
  • Microsoft Word or equivalent
  • Keyboard
  • Quiet place
  • Grammar software (Free | PaperRater)

If after a few jobs, you determine you like what you are doing, then you will want to invest in some of the tools I mention below.    Do not buy these items at first; get a few jobs under your belt.

Here is a list of some of the additional tools of the trade

  • Foot pedal – allows you to start and stop audio hands-free without having to start and stop with keystrokes.  This will greatly increase your speed and your revenue.
  • Text expander – uses a 3-letter code for long reoccurring phrases, thus eliminating typing the entire phrase each time.
  • Time tracking software
  • File converter – converts word documents to PDF.
  • Dictionary/thesaurus
  • Industry-specific dictionary (if you are focusing on medical or legal)

Below, I'll give you the companies that you can immediately apply for Transcription jobs at home but first let me give you some additional resources to check out too.

Online Transcription Courses

Personally, I recommend taking an online Transcription course to build up your confidence before you apply for a position.   However, many of the Transcription companies don't require previous experience but a course will save you time and money by getting you prepared.   The companies that do require experience will pay a little more for the experience.

Free Typing Test

I also recommend that you test your typing speed just for your peace of mind and work on increasing your speed.  Time is money in this business.

For example, If you have three hours you can work each day, increasing your typing speed translates to more money.

I have compiled the companies below into two groups.  1) Opportunities that don't require previous experience 2)  Opportunities that do require experience
